The H. Roger Grant Award is designed to encourage the development of professional relationships and the dissemination of knowledge relating to the theory and practice of transportation. It is named in honor of our late president, H. Roger Grant, and made possible through the generous support of his daughter, Julia Grant. Awards of up to $1,250 will provide reimbursement for eligible expenses associated with attending the annual meeting, including conference registration, hotel accommodations at the conference hotel (booked within the Lexington Group block), and transportation to and from the event. Applicants are asked to seek cost-effective travel options and must be able to document expenses after the meeting for reimbursement.
Applications for the H. Roger Grant Award will be accepted from all members of the Lexington Group. Non-members may also apply, provided that they meet the membership criteria, have been sponsored by a current Lexington Group member, and have not previously attended a Lexington Group meeting. This allows sponsored guests to experience the benefits associated with the annual meeting, at minimal cost, before they commit to membership in the Lexington Group.
Preference will be given to individuals who will leverage their attendance by incorporating the results of the meeting into their professional activities, especially individuals who are actively associated with:
- Libraries/archives
- Historical societies
- Universities
- Tourist railroads
- Shortline and regional railroads
We particularly encourage professionals 40 or under to apply.
To apply, please email travel@lexingtongroup.org with subject Application for an H. Roger Grant Travel Award by June 1, 2026 (the opening of registration), and include a brief note describing how attendance will be leveraged. The application for non-members should be sent by the sponsoring member. The award committee will review applications and notify selected recipients within three weeks, allowing time for early registration. Awardees will also be listed on the Lexington Group website.
